The Size of the Challenge
Favelas & Economic Impact

In Brazil, a poor individual is defined as someone living on up to $6,85 per day. This accounts for 49 million people.

It is estimated that a family takes 3 to 4 generations to break the cycle of extreme poverty.

Extreme poverty, on the other hand, affects 7.4 million Brazilians who live on less than $2,15/day.

The favelas generate revenues of 202 billion per year, an income greater than 20 of the 27 federal states.

16 million people living in favelas, 8% of the total population.

If the favelas were considered a Brazilian state, they would have the 5th largest population in the country.

There are 13 thousand favelas in Brazil. From 2010 to 2022, the number of favelas more than doubled.

89% are located in metropolitan regions of big cities.
